  • Sanna

Sanna sat down next to me. She lit one of her Marlboros and started her monologue.

"what if Tiffany becomes a lesbian, don't you think it wwas weird that our 3-year old girls were playing naked under the covers in my bed, that would be the worst, if she turns lesbian. Not like I'd disown her or anything but I would never allow her to bring her girlfriend over to my house, don't you think that is the worst thing that could happen`"

I almost dropped the book I was reading. The sun was cheerful and my daughter was playing with Sanna's daughter in the sandpit.

"oh, um, no. I think the worst thing that could happen to my daughter would be getting stuck in a relationship with an abusive man that would beat or rape her"

Sanna gets frustrated. Maybe my answer reminds her of the guy who has kicked, hit, threatened and played mindgames with her best friend for the last four long years. Maybe she just thinks I'm stupid.

"hey, know you just talk like something written in a book" she lashes out.

I would like to tell her to get her priorities straight.
But Sanna is already gone. Off to the corner shop to buy ice cream for her girl and a new pack of Marlboros and the latest gossipy tabloid. And some lottery tickets.

She will be back though. Asking for a cup of sugar or bringing some upsetting gossip.

Ugh. Out of all the bad things that can happen to her daughter, she's worried most about that?!  Wow.

I've never understood people like that, preferring ignorant idiocy over sane reason.  I've often thought of the 'pearls before swine' verse in the bible when I run into people like that.  We talk of pearls of wisdom, and of people being pigs.  Are we actually told not to waste our time on the mindless?  I can't express how freeing that thought was.  It helps me stay emotionally detached instead of frustrated.  They're just that way, they choose it, it's none of my business.  Too bad her kid is being raised like that...
